What Are the Options for Managing the Infected TKA?

Does irrigation and debridement have any role in managing the infected total knee arthroplasty (TKA)? How about 1-stage revision? Why do surgeons in North American consider 2-stage revision to be the gold?

Those are questions Richard Iorio, MD, from NYU Langone Medical Center, and Matthew P. Abdel, MD, from Mayo Clinic, addressed in their sessions at last year’s Transatlantic Orthopaedic Congress.

We caught up with Dr. Iorio and Dr. Abdel and asked them to share their thoughts on irrigation and debridement versus 1-stage revision versus 2-stage revision for the infected TKA.
